For a long time, Shafiq searched for his path without truly finding it.
After arriving in France from Afghanistan in 2014, he tried his hand at various jobs. He earned a vocational certificate in welding, explored the performing arts through a training program, and took on a series of assignments… but none of these paths felt like a long-term fit. At 25, one question kept coming back: what career is truly right for him?
That was when he joined DUO for a JOB and met his mentor, Pierre-Marie. Through their conversations, they discussed his experiences, his interests, and what brought him the most satisfaction in his daily life. One detail particularly caught Pierre-Marie’s attention: the volunteer work Shafiq was doing with the elderly 🌟
That was where the young man thrived. He loved being helpful, listening, and providing support. Pierre-Marie immediately sensed something that Shafiq himself hadn't fully identified yet. He suggested a new path: why not become a nursing assistant? 🏥
"I told myself: I’ve found my purpose, and I’m going to do it."
The decision was quick. For Shafiq, this direction made sense. For the first time, he felt he was moving toward a career that reflected who he was. Things accelerated rapidly. During a stint at the Timone Hospital in Marseille, a manager was impressed by his human qualities and professionalism. Convinced of his potential, she offered him a position directly on the hospital staff, without waiting for him to complete his training. It was an opportunity that confirmed exactly what Pierre-Marie had seen from their very first meetings.
Today, Shafiq works in a field that allows him to care for others every day. But beyond just finding a job, he has also gained a new sense of confidence.
Guided by a mentor who believed in him, he discovered a calling, built his self-assurance, and found his place 🌱
A connection that goes far beyond employment
The relationship between Shafiq and Pierre-Marie didn't end when the mentorship did. A genuine friendship was born from their journey.
Because an outside perspective, attentive listening, or a simple conversation can sometimes change the course of a life ✨
Volunteering: an often underestimated stepping stone
Shafiq’s story also highlights the valuable role volunteering can play in a professional journey. By committing his time to the elderly, he developed skills, gained experience, and, most importantly, discovered what truly drove him. Sometimes, finding your path starts simply by giving a little of your time to others 💚
